Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu has expressed deep sadness over the passage of a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Baba Oyebanji Sobaloju Olorode who died in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.

Baba Olorode, as he was popularly called,  was APC zonal leader from Ogbomoso zone. He died at 98.

A statement, issued shortly after the death of the Mogaji Onpetu described him as a titan whose unwavering dedication  and service to the people of Ogbomoso would forever be remembered.

“Today, we mourn the passing of a titan, Baba Oyebanji Sobaloju Olorode, whose 98 years of life were a testament to unwavering dedication, wisdom, and service to the people of Ogbomoso and Oyo State. As a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a zonal leader who shaped the political landscape of his community, Baba Olorode’s legacy transcends party lines and generations. His departure leaves a void that words cannot fill, but his contributions will forever be remembered”.

Adelabu said Baba Olorode was not only a political leader but a custodian of unity and progress.

Excerpts of statement read:

“ In an era where politics often divides, he stood as a bridge-builder, fostering collaboration among diverse groups to advance the collective good. His leadership in the Ogbomoso zone exemplified the ideals of the APC—a party he served with integrity, even during times of internal challenges and realignments . I recall his steadfastness during critical party meetings, where his voice resonated with the wisdom of experience, urging us to prioritize the people’s welfare over partisan interests “.

“As a former APC gubernatorial candidate in Oyo State, I deeply respected Baba’s commitment to democratic principles. He understood that true leadership is not about power but about empowering others—a lesson he imparted through his advocacy for grassroots development and youth inclusion. His vision aligned with the progressive ethos of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, emphasizing education, infrastructure, and equitable opportunities.

“Baba’s life was a masterclass in resilience. Born in an era of colonial rule, he witnessed Nigeria’s evolution and contributed to its democratic growth. His 98 years were marked by a rare blend of traditional values and modern pragmatism, enabling him to connect with both elders and the younger generation. Even in his final years, he remained a pillar of stability during political storms, advocating for reconciliation and fairness within the APC .

“As Minister of Power, I am reminded daily of the importance of light—both literal and metaphorical. Baba Olorode was a beacon for Ogbomoso, illuminating paths for development and unity. His efforts to resolve communal disputes and champion infrastructural projects, such as reliable electricity for rural areas, mirrored the goals we strive for nationally . His passing challenges us to honor his memory by redoubling our efforts to bring light and progress to every corner of Nigeria.

“To the Olorode family, the APC, and the people of Ogbomoso; Baba’s legacy is not confined to his years but lives on in the lives he touched and the institutions he strengthened. Let us celebrate his remarkable journey by upholding the values he cherished—justice, humility, service and purpose”.
