The Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB) has partnered the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) to train policymakers on strengthening basic education management.
The training, under the 2023/2024 UBEC Teacher Professional Development programme, seeks to improve management structures within the Universal Basic Education (UBE) scheme for better service delivery statewide.
The workshop, themed ‘Educational Policy Development and Purposeful Implementation of Basic Education Programme’, is holding from Sept. 1 to 3 in Ikeja.
The initiative aligns LASUBEB’s strategies with national policies of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), ensuring sustainable delivery of quality basic education across Lagos State.
NIEPA’s Head of Training and Research, Dr Lara Ogunsola, said the institute’s mandate is to build capacity among education stakeholders in Nigeria and West Africa.
She explained the training would equip executives with approaches to manage UBE programmes, tackle challenges, and advance effective policy implementation at state and local government levels.
“We build the skills of education managers, especially top officials, to ensure effective policy and programme implementation across the education sector.
“This goes beyond Lagos State. Our commitment is to capacity building nationwide, ensuring administrators have the skills to transform learning outcomes,” she said.
Executive Chairman of LASUBEB, Dr Hakeem Shittu, described the training as crucial for equipping senior officials with the tools required for effective education policy execution.
He said the training covers LASUBEB headquarters, 20 Local Government Education Authority secretariats, and public primary schools, ensuring uniform implementation at every level of basic education.
According to him, the workshop objectives include identifying policy development stages, understanding strategies, assessing education policies, and improving communication and stakeholder engagement for policy effectiveness.
Other goals include enhancing monitoring and evaluation systems, strengthening accountability frameworks, and building consensus to achieve impactful results in basic education delivery across Lagos State.
“As we work to improve basic education in Lagos, it is vital our leaders develop skills for effective policies, stakeholder engagement, and progress monitoring,” Shittu said.
The LASUBEB boss praised UBEC for financial support and commended the Teacher Development Department for coordinating the initiative, aligning with Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Agenda and inclusive education vision.
He urged participants to engage fully in the sessions and apply lessons daily, stressing their collective efforts would positively impact learners and support the Greater Lagos Agenda.
