…As Human Rights Condemn Lagos Firm’s Irrational Action
This is not the best of times for Mr. Kayode Adegoke, a former human resources associate of Spectrum Technologies, a Lagos-based technology firm located in Ikeja, after his employer terminated his appointment over an alleged bisexual allegation leveled against him by his wife.
The situation later attracted unlawful intimidation and threats to his life by the police, who frequently stormed his home, thereby forcing his decision to relocate away from Nigeria for safety reasons.
Mr. Adegoke who was employed by Spectrum Technologies from 2023 until his dismissal in September 2025. His dismissal followed allegations of engaging in bisexual practices with a colleague, which reportedly occurred at his home. These allegations arose after a domestic altercation between Mr. Adegoke and his wife in July 2025, after which his wife reported the matter to his employer. She also exposed other previously discreet private relationships to his employer, thereby escalating the case beyond control.
Interestingly, Mr. Adegoke had hoped that the issue would be handled confidentially within the organization; however, he was reportedly summoned and eventually suspended by the management.
In September 2025, the matter took a different twist as his appointment was terminated following an internal investigation, and it was later reported to the law enforcement authorities.
Under Nigerian law, consensual same-sex relationships were noted to be criminalized, carrying severe penalties and often triggering widespread societal hostility.
Human rights organizations were reported to have long warned that exposure, particularly by employers, could result in arrest, torture, mob violence, or death.
However, it was not long before security officers stormed his home and served him with a summons for questioning.
Within that same period, details of the whole incident were published and circulated widely within his community on the pages of a local newspaper without his knowledge.
Worrying enough, certain individuals believed to be staff members of his workplace started monitoring his movement in a bid to give the security intel on how to arrest him.
To make matters worse, the incident created a big gap in his family, as his wife absconded with two of his younger children without notice, prompting him to also relocate to a different cities and within Nigeria with the other children left behind by his wife in order to avoid arrest.
Meanwhile, human rights advocates have condemned the action of Mr. Adegoke’s employer for playing a major role in escalating the issue beyond this level. This was the view of a Lagos-based human rights advocate, who is familiar with the case. He noted that the employer should have de-escalated the case by resolving it within themselves instead of involving the police.
With police involvement, public exposure, and the absence of any meaningful protection, it was said that remaining in Nigeria had become impossible for him. A close associate was quoted as stating that relocation within the country was not considered safe, as he believed he would either be arrested or killed.
