The Lagos State Govt. and Ogun State Govt. have confirmed the tragic road accident involving former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, which claimed two lives on Monday.

The accident occurred around 12 noon, along the Lagos–Ibadan expressway at the Makun axis in Ogun state. Joshua survived the incident with minor injuries.

Two people died after a Lexus Jeep that Joshua was in crashed into a stationary truck around the Sinoma area near the Sagamu axis of the road.

In a joint statement signed by Kayode Akinmade, special adviser on information and strategy to the Ogun governor, and Gbenga Omotoso, commissioner for information for Lagos State, they extend their deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident.

The governments of Ogun and Lagos states also said that they are closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that the affected persons receive the best possible medical care.

“The Governments of Ogun and Lagos States wish to confirm that British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, was involved in a road traffic accident earlier today along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

“The vehicle conveying a team of four reportedly collided with a stationary truck, resulting in two fatalities.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident and pray that Almighty God grants them the strength to bear this difficult loss.

“Anthony Joshua and another passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos. Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency medical intervention at this time. A full medical team has been assembled and will continue to monitor them closely.

“Anthony Joshua is conscious and has been in communication with his family.

“The Governments of Ogun and Lagos States are closely monitoring the situation and will ensure that the affected persons receive the best possible medical care. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have also commenced.

“We appreciate the concern shown by members of the public and kindly request privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family at this time.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has confirmed that the tragic accident involving the convoy of renowned British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua claimed the lives of two people on the Makun axis of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

The Ogun Sector Command confirmed that the accident happened at Sinoma, near Sagamu, involving two vehicles.

The FRSC PRO in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi, in a press release, attributes the crash to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking by the driver, who overtook from the right-hand side and rammed into a stationary vehicle.

“An Auto crash occured today 29h December 2025 involving two vehicles along Lagos-Ibadan expressway at SINOMA.

“Sagamu unit of FRSC rescue team were at the scene as soon as they were informed.

“Five people were involved, one was injured, two were unhurt while two were killed in the crash.

“The cause of the crash was due to over-speeding and wrongful overtaking by the drive who overtook from the right hand side thereby ramming into a stationary vehicle.”
